Admission and Degree Requirements
Graduate Curriculum
Students may pursue online course work in Spanish, Central American, South American, Caribbean, Mexican, and Mexican-American literature and culture, as well as in language and linguistics. The online M.A. program's thesis, internship abroad, or additional course work plan provides flexibility for students completing their degree requirements. Students have a non-minor option (33 hours), with all course work in Spanish, or they may choose to complete a minor or six hours of course work in a related area of interest (36 hours), such as Latin American studies, women and gender studies, Southwestern studies or education (students seeking teacher certification should consult the Office of Educator Preparation for official information on becoming a certified teacher in the state of Texas).
Admission Requirements
- 2.75 GPA on a scale of 4.0, calculated over the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work leading to the bachelor's degree
- 3.0 GPA in 12 upper-division undergraduate semester credit hours in Spanish including six hours in literature
- Statement of purpose written in Spanish explaining the applicant's professional and personal interest in the M.A. in Spanish

Master of Arts in Spanish with minor (36 hours)
- Thesis Option: 24 hours of course work in Spanish + 6 hours minimum course work in minor + 6 hours thesis
- Internship Option: 24 hours of course work in Spanish + 6 hours minimum course work in minor + 6 hours Internship
- Non-thesis/Internship option: 30 hours of course work in Spanish + 6 hours minimum course work in minor
Master of Arts in Spanish without minor (33 hours)
- Thesis Option: 27 hours of course work in Spanish + 6 hours of thesis
- Internship Option: 27 hours of course work in Spanish + 6 hours of internship
- Non-thesis/internship option: 33 hours of course work in Spanish
Graduate Minor in Spanish
- Students with majors other than Spanish may select Spanish as a minor.
- Students should have completed at least nine hours of advanced undergraduate Spanish with a GPA of 2.75 or higher (4.0 scale).
- The graduate minor consists of a minimum of six hours in Spanish.
Admissions Decision Process
Once the Graduate College has received all admission materials through the online application system, it calculates the applicant’s graduate point average and releases the application to the Graduate Spanish Admissions Committee for an admissions recommendation. Final admission decisions are made by the Dean of The Graduate College. Generally, an admission decision will follow within three to four weeks from the time all application materials are received, but it could take up to six weeks during peak times. The number of applicants influences the response time for decisions. After an application decision, the applicant will receive an email notification from the Graduate College, which sends correspondence to the email address provided on the application.
Applicants may submit an admission appeal to the dean of The Graduate College for a denial decision within three weeks of the date of the decision. An appeal form for the graduate dean is available on The Graduate College's website. The written appeal should include additional supporting documentation. Admission appeals will be answered via email within three weeks of receipt of the applicant's appeal.
