Graduate Student Opportunities
The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers their Graduate students several development opportunities including:
Graduate Instructor Assistantships
A limited number of GIAs are employed by our academic department, paid from faculty salaries on a monthly basis, but are not reported as the “teacher of record.” Graduate instructional assistants are responsible for a specific group of students (typically undergraduate students) and assign some portion of these same students’ grades. They may also be assigned other teaching related work as determined by the needs of the department and/or faculty. These are twenty hour per week positions. A limited number of GIAs are available to new and continuing students. If you are interested in applying for the GIA position, please contact Dr. Cuadrado at ac41@txstate.edu.
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
After completing 18 Span Grad credits in our program, you would be eligible to be considered for a GTA. GTAs are employed by our academic department, paid from faculty salaries and reported as the “teacher of record” for an organized undergraduate class. Graduate teaching assistants receive a faculty contract and are paid on a monthly basis. GTA's are hired to teach two sections of first-year Spanish each semester under the guidance of the Coordinator of First-Year Spanish. Our students thus gain college-level teaching experience while earning their MA degree.
Graduate Research Assistantships and National and International Internships
A limited number of GRAs are employed through and depend on external funding secured each year. Chapter 10 of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Field Operation Handbook defines research assistants as students “engaged in research in the course of obtaining advanced degrees and the research is performed under the supervision of a member of the faculty in a research environment provided by the institution under a grant or contract.” If employed on a grant, the work performed must directly relate to the objectives of the grant. Graduate research assistants can be appointed for a semester, the academic year, or the duration of a research project or any portion thereof and are paid on a monthly basis.
The Spanish M.A. program currently offers two year-round Spanish Graduate Research Assistantships for translation work for Texas State University's Translational Health Research Center https://healthresearch.txst.edu/. Spanish GRA's work under the supervision of Spanish graduate faculty.
The Spanish M.A. program partners with SCALEUP to provide translation experience for Spanish graduate students.
