French 3351 – History of French Cinema, 1960 to the present

Description:
This course has a dual purpose: 1) to analyze 10 films from the New Wave to contemporary times that represent both French and Francophone Cinema from the African continent, and 2) to discuss the topic of "consent"—the personal and political meanings of the word—as it has been articulated both in the U.S. and in French-speaking countries these past years. As a companion to the course, an International Film Festival and Symposium (TBA) will be held at Texas State in April 2022. 

French 3381 – Business French

Description:
Business French is a course designed for students interested in taking the certification exam for the Diplômes de Français Professionnel granted by the French Chamber of Commerce, a state agency that certifies fluency in professional French, and the recommendations of which are widely followed internationally by businesses trading with France. Building upon the skills acquired in Composition and Conversation (FR3303) with a focus on French for the Professions, the course will concentrate on management case studies (in human resources and crisis control), job searches (with preparation of resumes and interviews), and study the specifics of the French business culture

French 4304B – Genre Fiction in French

Description:
In this course students will read novellas and short stories from 19th-century French literature that share a supernatural or fantastic element (le fantastique littéraire), indicative of the popularity of the genre throughout the century and reflective of the influence of both E. T A. Hoffmann and Edgar Allan Poe. Authors studied will include Théophile Gautier, Prosper Mérimée, Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly, Jean Lorrain, Marcel Scwob, Catulle Mendès, and Villiers de l’Isle-Adam.

French 4308 – French Translation II

Description:
This course provides a theoretical framework for the advanced study of translation and an introduction to certain practical aspects of translation such as subtitling, localization, and transcreation. We will read in French some of the fundamental texts of the theory of translation and devote a large part of the course to practicing translation from French into English. You will become familiar with the process of translation and key translation techniques and be able to produce, as a final project, an original translation from French into English in your specific field of study, be it literature, anthropology, art history, journalism, psychology, or any other field. Having taken Translation I is NOT a prerequisite for this course.
